From Green Energy to enabling Health Care IT, more than ever, we need scientific, engineering, and technology leaders to help move our world forward. Thus, technology leaders and teams are being asked to take on broader leadership roles, involving complex communication and leadership tasks like never before.

Leaders that encourage and scientists, engineers, and technical professionals to develop skills beyond their specific area of expertise will get a large return in the long run. Their contribution ensures that business management focuses on long-term potential innovation and products and not simply short-term profitability. The ability of your team to communicate and influence stakeholders effectively are key to converting the coming opportunities of the current economy.

This population has received little if any specific training on management and leadership, and classically has very little support from peers or senior management for the needed transformation. To make the change, they need to focus on “illogical” softer skills. From our original research and careers, we believe we have a model for leaders and managers to leverage as they help this critical component of our workforce.

About the survey:

This survey is conducted by Mark House. Mark has extensive experience in Financial Services, internet, and mobile/cell phone based system as Vice President of Global Mobile Engineering for VeriSign, Vice President of Product Management for Merant, Director of Data Management at both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, along with experience in product development and research at IBM. His global teams have conceived, built, and expanded systems that support literally billions of transactions per/day. He builds teams by developing a clear technology vision balanced with operational realities and delivering this through pragmatic organizational change, often while business’ are working through real market and organizational crises.

Mr. House has a Masters in EE from Rice University and BS degrees in Physics and EE from SMU. He is also a graduate of the Georgetown Executive Coaching and Leadership Development program and an ACC accredited member of the ICF (International Coaching Federation).
